Rebecca Pidgeon is a singer, songwriter and recording artist, she was born in 1965 and is currently 59 years old. Rebecca is also an American-British actress, born in Cambridge, Ma. she grew up in Scotland, holds dual citizenship, and has appeared on stage and in feature films. Rebecca graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. From 1986 to 1990 she was the lead singer of the British folk/pop band “Ruby Blue”. Rebecca starred in her first feature film “The Dawning” in 1988. She married director David Mamet in 1991 and has since starred in his plays and films. I recently watched her in Mamet’s 1997 film “The Spanish Prisoner”. In 2007 Rebecca appeared in the television film “Jesse Stone: Sea Change” as a murder/bank robbery suspect. This is Rebecca’s twelfth album the last being 2024’s “Songs of LA”.
“Unillusion” was recorded at Forward Motion Studios in Los Angeles with long-time producer Fernando Perdomo. ”Unillusion” is conceived as a relaxed and intimate recording in contrast to the sound of her most recent albums. Rebecca states “It felt like the right approach, minimal, human, with moments that are stripped down to just voice and acoustic guitar. The ensemble includes Rebecca, guitar and vocals; Perdomo, bass and electric guitar; Andy Studer, violin and viola; Eszter Balint, violin; and Matt Tecu, drums.
On many of the songs it is difficult to understand the lyrics. On the opening track “Be My Butterfly” I was able to find the lyrics online. “There’s a tree down on Latimer Road, don’t know how it happened, don’t know how it happened, there’s a car parked right at that door, everybody knows that bungalow. Be my butterfly, purple room, bubble chair, my love, my love, my love, my love. There’s a window over the bar, looking like a rocket, looking like a rocket, there’s a staircase into the light, everybody saw in Chinatown. Be my butterfly, purple room, swimming pool, my love, my love, my love, my love. There’s a mirror over the bed, looking down on the Sunset, looking down on the Sunset. Strange angel gets in my head, things got crazy in the Amazon. Be my butterfly, purple room, swimming pool, my love, my love, my love, my love.
On “Dasharatha” Rebecca sings “walkin’ to the river…to wash away the intent…in my beginning and my ending”. “Queen Of The Fields” features Rebecca on acoustic guitar as she chimes “I need simple direction, she walks in the beauty”. On “Where Is The Man? she asks “where is the man? with the shiny face”. “The Pleasing Waters Of Jahnavi” features Rebecca as she chants “aim the arrow in the sky and let it fly”, with some nice percussion from Tecu. “Drumlins” opens as a narrative as Rebecca belts out “I saw you through the trees, walkin’ up to me, black dog running at your heels…I’m waking from my dream, what are you to me…the dangerous places of your England. On “Monkey Man” Rebecca bursts “let me be your monkey…let me be your arrow, let me be your bow, let me be your monkey, let me be your monkey man”.
On “Warm Stone” Rebecca cries “what showed me, lord…I saw this woman in despair and I knew it was I, I was never much good at talking…I wanna be your warm stepping stone”. “Hypnotize Me” once again features Rebecca’s beautiful voice as she chirps “it must be something that you said, oh, to hypnotize me. and although I know your just lying, it must be something that you said to hypnotize me”, with Studer on the viola. On the closer “Myself” Rebecca croons “someone’s got to save me and it’s got to be me, myself”.
Rebecca is a captivating actress who also sings. She has appeared in films alongside Gene Hackman, William H. Macy, Sarah Jessica Parker, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and others. “Unillusion” offers testimony to Rebecca’s continuing power as a storyteller, not only on screen but also in the recording studio. Give a listen to this intimate album.
