Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Davis Cohen
“These Things Shall Pass” marks the tenth full-length album from Memphis-area musician Davis Coen, fulfilling his long-held ambition to create a spiritually-focused record. The album offers a diverse collection of classic spiritual songs, ranging from timeless American hymns like “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “Old Rugged Cross,” to classic gospel radio hits such as Willie Banks and the Messengers’ “Working For Jesus.” The title track, Stuart Hamblen’s “These Things Shall Pass,” notably covered by country legends Hank Snow and Johnny Cash, also finds a place on the album.
Beyond these revered selections, the album features six original songs, including the light-hearted duets “Saint Christopher” and “Jesus’ Hand,” which showcase Coen’s vocal collaboration with former Billy Joe Shaver guitarist Patrick McClary. Recorded at Sand Dog Studios in Batesville, MS, the album was co-produced by Coen and drummer Ryan Rogers.
A Blend of Contemporary Country-Blues
Coen’s musical foundation is deeply embedded in blues, country, and religious music. He describes his distinctive sound as ‘contemporary country-blues,’ a modern fusion of the varied musical influences he’s absorbed from living in the Mid-Southern U.S. and from his extensive touring.
With over two decades of experience, Coen has graced stages at festivals, clubs, and bars across the U.S. He’s a repeat performer at renowned Mid-South regional events like the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR, and the Juke Joint Festival in the Mississippi Delta. Coen has also completed a dozen blues circuit tours of Europe, sharing bills with blues luminaries such as R.L. Burnside, Koko Taylor, and Bo Diddley. His versatility has also led him to headline more diverse festival lineups alongside artists like Wynton Marsalis, Bonnie Raitt, and Leon Russell.
Acclaimed Features and Recognition
Coen’s music has garnered significant media attention, with features in various TV broadcasts, including Martin Scorsese’s PBS special The Blues, the reality cable show Lizard Lick Towing, and Dare You To Do It Again, a documentary on the music of blues matriarch Jessie Mae Hemphill. His work has also been highlighted on NPR’s Morning Edition and World Café, as well as Dan Aykroyd’s weekly House of Blues Radio Hour. For a decade, Coen’s music was a staple on XM/Sirius Satellite Radio’s ‘Bluesville.’
