Can’t Get Enough: A Tribute to Bad Company
Primary Wave Music
Bad Company was instantly, enthusiastically embraced in 1973 for all the right reasons. Singer Paul Rodgers (one of the most expressive ever in rock) and drummer Simon Kirke from the band Free, Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, and bassist Boz Burrell of King Crimson came together and wrote straightforward, bluesy, hard rocking tunes to please. They were superb musicians and their music moved people, and made people move their asses just the same. The English rock “supergroup” now own a catalog of songs as prominent in the lexicon of popular music as any.
Bad Company made a mark on perhaps thousands of artists. From the realms of rock, to roots and blues, and even country, everybody extols Bad Company. Surprisingly, Can’t Get Enough: A Tribute to Bad Company, is the first album of its kind.
Ten participants were picked for the album, all individually produced. Who to include must have been a daunting task. Of the countless that are worthy, all would likely have jumped at the chance to be included. These ten span a fitting Bad Company-influenced spectrum of styles and are presented in a flawless flow.
The album begins on the more contemporary end of that spectrum with “Ready for Love,” rendered without reservation by HARDY, who draws perhaps the most wrinkled line from now, back to the heyday of Bad Company. Riff heavy and metallic, Halestorm then lassos “Shooting Star,” injecting into it the perfect balance of ferociousness and reverence. Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators abetted by frequent collaborator Slash begins steering the program into an earthy mode more directly tied to Bad Company’s initial M.O. Their version of “Feel Like Makin’ Love” stings sweetly.
Blackberry Smoke, with Paul Rodgers on backing vocals, grounds the album with a superior take on “Run with the Pack.” Singer and guitarist Charlie Starr and company present a smoky and soulful brand of “new” southern rock that illustrates ideally just how much Bad Company was inspired by southern American music. Full circle indeed, and a blast of rock and roll freedom flying high. Rising raw country star Charlie Crockett, produced by Shooter Jennings and backed by an all-star assemblage featuring Rolling Stones bassist Darryl Jones, continues in that spirit with a terrific rendering of “Bad Company.”
“Seagull,” one of Bad Company’s most beautiful Rodgers/Ralphs compositions, arrives on a breeze of sparkling acoustic guitars. But Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, Phil Collen, and Ronan McHugh, with Bad Co.’s Simon Kirke on drums and Rodgers again on backing vocals, turn up the heat near the song’s conclusion. The Pretty Reckless brings this salute to Bad Company home with a Free classic. Rodgers’ “All Right Now” was perhaps the blueprint for Bad Company and enjoys equally lasting universal appeal as any of Bad Company’s songs.
Can’t Get Enough is aptly titled. It rocks steady and works wonders in updating Bad Company’s irresistible songs for today’s audiences.
