The Lucky Losers
Dirty Cat Records
The Lucky Losers are a vocal duo performing blues with a soulful 60’s retro sound. This is the third album for Cathy Lemons and Phil Berkowitz.
Lemons, is originally from the Dallas area where she used to run with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Anson Funderburgh. She also toured with John Lee Hooker. For the last twenty-seven years she has lived in the San Francisco area. Her last solo recording was 2013’s “Black Crow”. Berkowitz is also a harmonica ace who has toured and performed with Billy Branch, Sean Carney, and Duke Robillard. Their debut recording 2015’s “A Winning Hamd” received rave reviews. Their 2016 follow-up album “In Any Town” was also widely acclaimed.
The Lucky Losers have once again teamed up with co-producer Kid Anderson and recorded at his Greaseland Studios in San Jose, Ca. Rounding out the band are guitarist Ian Lamson; keyboardist Chris Burns; and the rhythm section of bassist Endre Tarczy and drummer Robi Bean.
Eleven new songs were written by Lemons, Berkowitz and Danny Caron. Caron was the guitarist and musical director for Charles Brown. Caron was with Brown from 1987 until 1999. During that period Brown was nominated for sixteen Blues Music Awards.
Lemons states “Phil and I have traveled some of the loneliest highways in America to bring our music to the people”. She says their music should serve as a distraction from everyday events. The Lucky Losers “do or die” determination is expressed on “It’s Never Too Early”.
Andersen is also a six time BMA nominated guitarist and he sits in on half the tracks. He plays lead on “Love is Blind”; and on “Alligator Baptism” about the dehumanization of our society. Andersen also plays percussion on the “The River” a song about redemption.
Special guest guitarist Laura Chavez has worked with Lara Price, Candye Kane and most recently Casey Hensley. She hasn’t yet received a BMA nomination but she will. Chavez plays lead on “Take the Long Road” and “Supernatural Blues”. Nancy Wright was a 2017 BMA nominee for Best Instrumentalist-Horn and is nominated again this year. She lends her talent on two tracks including “Bulldogs and Angels (Bring It On Out)”.
The Lucky Losers advice is to stay on the road and surround your self with good people. The Lucky Losers have done so. They are the cream and will begin their own rise to the top with this fabulous new recording.
