Robbin Kapsalis’s “The Blues Is In The House” is produced by harmonica ace Giles Robison and recorded at AGP Studio in Nozay France by Arnaud Fradin and Albert Milauchian. It was mixed and mastered by Fradin at Mojo Hand Studio. Robison’s harmonica riffs can be heard throughout the recording. The album is dedicated to the loving memories of Tommy Moses, Mark Chandler and Joe Louis Walker.
The lead off track was written by Terry Abrahamson (who wrote for Muddy Waters) and Derrick Porcell in 2019. “The sparks is gonna fly, teardrops sho’ to cry, anything can happen, you know the reason why…you know the blues is in the house, baby, make yourself at home”, Joe Louis Walker guests on guitar. “Up The Line” was written by Walter Jacobs and Willie Dixon, the original featured Buddy Guy on guitar, “You used to love me, you said I was your heart’s desire, you’re actin’ strange lately trying to drive my love away, I’m cuttin’ out baby, girl I’m going back up the line, if I stay another day, you’re goin’ to drive me out of my mind”.
“Lead Me On” is credited to Deadric Malone, and was sung by Bobby “Blue” Bland in 1961, “where you walk, I’ll walk right by your side, you lead me on…and I’ll follow you”, with guitarists Francois Nicolleau and Nicholas Deshayes. “The Comeback” written by L.C. Frazier was recorded by Memphis Slim in 1990, “I know my baby, baby sho’ gonna jump and shout…when the train roll up and I come walkin’ out, hold on baby, I be home one day, honey don’t let nobody, lead my good man astray…been so long, I be on my way”.
“Sittin’ In Top Of The World” was written by Walter Vinson and Lonnie Chatmon core members of The Mississippi Shieks and first recorded in 1930, the song was also further popularized in 1957 by Howlin’ Wolf, and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008. “My sweetheart left me, Lord, she went away, and now I’m gone and no more worries, ’cause I’m sittin’ on top of the world”. “Rollin’ And Tumblin'” was written by Morgan C. Robinson and recorded by Elmore James in 1960; James was inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, “I rolled and tumbled, I cried the whole night long, yes I rolled and tumbled I cried the whole night long, I got up this morning, feeling that something goin’ on wrong, well now I want you to love me baby, please let me be…if you don’t like my peaches, please don’t shake my tree”.
“Love Hangover (Redux)” is an older tune re-interpreted by Kapsalis, “I got a love hangover, no complaints…sent shivers up my spine… don’t know my head from my toes”, with the rhythm section of Arnaud Gobin, bass; and Cyril Durand, drums. “I Wanna Know” was written and recorded by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins in 1966, “I wanna know, what you see when you look at me…tell me baby, I ain’t no square”.
“Shake Your Hips” is a song written and recorded by James Moore a.k.a. Slim Harpo in 1965 as Kapsalis channels “I wanna tell you ’bout a dance, that’s goin’ round everybody doin it, from the grown-ups, down, don’t have to move yo’ head, don’t have to move yo’ hands, don’t have to move yo’ lips, just shake yo’ hips….do the hip shake baby, shake yo’ hips, baby”. On the closer, “Gotta Hear The Blues”, a second tune from Abrahamson and Porcell, Kapsalis wails “in all I gotta do, in all that is true, I gotta hear the blues”, with Arnaud Fradin on dobro.
Kapsalis didn’t just come out of nowhere, for more than a decade she led the DC-based soul blues band Vintage#18, performing across North America from intimate Memphis venues to large stages. Their debut album “Grit” earned a Blues Blast Music Award nomination for ‘New Artist Debut Album’ with the single “Soul Shaker” making it’s mark on the Living Blues Charts. Kapsalis has shared stages with Grammy nominated legends John Primer and Billy Branch. Kapsalis demonstrates why she’s not just preserving the blues tradition, she’s helping to define it’s future with her vocals filled with passion and grit. Kapsalis is no longer to be denied.
