Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey’s Interview with Eliza Neals

Eliza Neals is a powerhouse in modern blues—an artist, songwriter, producer, bandleader, composer, arranger, keyboardist, and label owner whose self-written and self-produced music has been heard on SiriusXM’s B.B. King’s Bluesville since 2015. Blending blues, rock, and soul into bold, unforgettable songs, Neals has built a body of work that pushes beyond traditional genre boundaries while staying rooted in the emotional truth that makes blues timeless.
Known for her commanding three-and-a-half-octave mezzo-soprano voice, Eliza has earned the respect of major figures throughout the blues world, including Buddy Guy. In January 2025, he invited her to open for him at his legendary Chicago club, Buddy Guy’s Legends—an honor that reflects both her reputation and her growing influence in the genre. She has also been invited four times by Blues Foundation Hall of Fame icon Joe Louis Walker to perform at the prestigious Mustique Blues Festival. After seeing her perform there, Mick Jagger famously remarked, “A voice I soon won’t forget. Great.”
What sets Eliza Neals apart is the way she brings a fresh, contemporary energy to blues music while honoring its roots. Her sound carries the grit and force of Detroit, mixing blues with rock power and soul sensibility in a way that feels urgent and alive. As the last Motown-trained singer mentored by legendary songwriter Barrett Strong, she carries a rare lineage into the present, pairing classic vocal discipline with fearless modern expression. It’s a combination that has helped her reach listeners well beyond the traditional blues audience.
Neals is also a remarkably prolific recording artist, with more than a dozen studio albums to her name. Across those releases, she has embraced modern production techniques and explored different musical textures while maintaining a strong blues foundation. Her willingness to experiment has helped her create a signature sound that bridges classic blues tradition and contemporary style.
Throughout her career, Eliza has collaborated with a wide range of respected musicians, including Joe Louis Walker, Lance Lopez, Popa Chubby, and King Solomon Hicks. These collaborations reflect her versatility and her ability to move comfortably between old-school blues authority and modern crossover appeal.
On stage, Eliza Neals is known for her explosive live performances, whether she is headlining festivals or opening shows with the kind of impact that earns repeat invitations. Her presence is powerful, her delivery is fearless, and her connection to audiences is immediate and electric. She is not simply performing songs—she is commanding a moment.
Beyond her own music, Eliza has also become an important example of independent leadership in blues. As a label owner since 2015, she has helped model a path of artistic control and self-determination at a time when more artists are looking to build careers on their own terms. Her influence extends beyond her recordings and performances, especially as a visible and successful woman pushing for greater female representation in a genre that has often overlooked it.
Eliza Neals continues to be a driving force in modern blues: a bold creative voice with deep roots, serious range, and a clear vision. In the studio and on stage, she brings power, originality, and authenticity to everything she does—and she remains an artist you do not want to miss live.
