Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey’s Interview with Andrew Strong
Andrew Strong was born in Dublin in November 1973 into a deeply musical family. His father, Rob Strong, was one of Ireland’s most respected rock singers in the 1970s and remains active in music to this day. Growing up around performers and rehearsals, Andrew was drawn to music early and naturally.
He began performing at the age of 11, playing in local cover bands with school friends. By his early teens, he already stood out for the power and maturity of his voice.
In 1990, John Hughes, manager of The Corrs, invited Andrew to audition for director Alan Parker, who was casting the film The Commitments. After several days of auditions and performances, Andrew received a call from casting director John Hubbard confirming he had landed the role of Deco Cuffe, the film’s lead singer.
The Commitments was released in 1991 to critical and commercial success, with the soundtrack selling over 12 million copies worldwide. Andrew’s performance became one of the defining elements of the film.
In 1992, Andrew received a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor, a Grammy nomination for his contribution to the soundtrack, and a Brit Award for Best Soundtrack.
Andrew has performed with The Commitments only on special occasions, including the film’s premiere events in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dublin, the Grammy Awards, The David Letterman Show, and a Bette Midler charity concert at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles.
Even with a short but explosive moment in the global spotlight, Andrew Strong’s voice remains one of the most recognizable and powerful in modern soul and rock cinema.
