Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Geoff Newhall from Farmhand
Long Hollow Blues may be Farmhand’s debut album, but it doesn’t sound like a first step. From the first track, it feels like you’ve been dropped into the world of a band that’s been doing this for years—tight, confident, and completely sure of its voice. That sense of history comes from the players themselves: Farmhand is built on decades of collective experience, and you can hear it in every groove, every lyric, and every turn of the melody.
Farmhand is anchored by three core members: Geoff Newhall on bass, Jimi Fogelsong on vocals and drums, and Richard Fleming on vocals and rhythm guitar. Together, they craft songs that feel lived-in and honest—music that can make you grin one minute and hit you in the chest the next. The band’s mission is simple: write songs that feel real. “We tried to come up with songs that hit you where you live,” Newhall says, pointing to the album’s combination of powerful lyrics and melodies that stick with you long after the music stops.
A key part of the album’s punch comes from its rotating cast of lead guitar firepower. Dan Pierce, Jamie Potterbaum, and Michael Saint-Leon each bring their own voice to the record, appearing on four tracks apiece. Instead of forcing a single “signature” lead style, Farmhand lets the songs choose the right flavor—sometimes sharp and biting, sometimes soulful and spacious, sometimes pure rock-and-roll spark. That approach keeps the album dynamic while still feeling cohesive, like different characters showing up in the same story.
There’s also a special guest moment that adds extra weight: acclaimed artist Tom Hambridge steps in on lead vocals for the album’s only cover, “Fresh Out,” originally performed by Kingfish Ingram. It’s a standout inclusion—not because it’s flashy, but because it fits the spirit of the record. Even when Farmhand steps into someone else’s song, they make it feel like part of their world.
Across twelve tracks, Long Hollow Blues moves effortlessly through the emotional range that great roots-based rock always aims for. It’s the kind of album that can make you laugh, make you think, make you crank the volume, and make you sit still for a second and actually listen. The songwriting is direct without being simplistic, and the melodies are the kind that sneak up on you—the “earworm” kind that turns a first listen into a second and third.
The band’s process was just as organic as the music feels. “There’s an energy to the songs in the way they evolved,” Newhall explains. “They grew organically from initial ideas to their final form… like polishing a stone.” That matters, because you can hear the care in the final product. These songs don’t feel assembled. They feel discovered—shaped over time until the hooks, lyrics, and grooves lock into place.
Musically, Farmhand draws on classic American grooves—blues, roots rock, and straight-up rock-and-roll muscle—but nothing here sounds like a costume. The record carries the spirit of the past while still sounding fresh, driven by the band’s ability to make familiar ingredients feel personal. And lyrically, the themes are timeless: truth, struggle, humor, resilience, and the everyday moments that reveal who we really are.
Long Hollow Blues is a debut in name only. In feel, it’s the sound of a band arriving fully formed—confident, soulful, and ready to leave a mark. If this is Farmhand’s starting line, it’s a strong sign that what comes next is going to be even bigger.
