Garry Burnside, youngest son of legendary Hill Country bluesman R.L. Burnside, cut his teeth playing with his famous father and other siblings while growing up, beginning his professional career at the tender age of eleven. Garry spent his teens and twenties as the protege, bassist and occasional guitarist for neighboring Mississippi Blues legend Junior Kimbrough, with whom he toured and recorded as he appears on all of Kimbrough’s Fat Possum recordings. After Kimbrough’s passing in 1988 Garry began recording with the North Mississippi All-Stars Hill Country Revue. Garry worked with brother Duwayne Burnside and Grammy winning nephew Cedric Burnside. Garry also worked with Jesse Mae Hemphill, Bobby Rush, and others.
Garry has recently recorded this solo debut “It’s My Time Now” at the Royal Studios in Memphis with Grammy-award-winning producer Boo Mitchell, son of the legendary Hi Records producer Willie Mitchell. This album is a tribute to Garry’s mentors, RL and Junior as well as a declaration of independence after decades of being a sideman. Included are nine originals, one co-write with Kimbrough, and one classic R.L. Burnside cover. Garry possesses a unique individual style featuring interesting rhythms and changes and lots of great blues-rock guitar. The band features Garry, guitar and vocals; Andrea Stanton, rhythm guitar; Pinky Pulliam, bass; and Avery Dilworth, drums.
“High” is the first of three instrumentals with Garry playing some fiery guitar. “Young Country Boy” includes Garry as he sings “I’m just a young country boy, maybe too young but this little boy is a joy. The title track “It’s My Time Now” features Garry as he chimes “don’t make it up, it’s my time now”.
“Hanging In There” features John C. Stubblefield replacing Pulliam on bass, as Garry chants “just know how I feel, I’m hanging in there”. “Bad Luck City” is a cover of a classic instrumental from R.L. Burnside which features a rather hypnotic vibe.
“Ramblin'” is a rockin’ rolling tune, as Garry cries “don’t you go, my baby’s left me, don’t you go, I searched for her all over, but my baby, she can’t be found”. On “Holdin’ My Woman” Garry groans “you know my woman, you holdin’ my girl…you hold my woman, you holdin’ my girl”.
On “I Been Looking” Garry howls “I been looking for my babe, if you see my babe, tell her where I am…she been gone for five long days, if you see my girl, tell her where I am”. “She Gone” features Garry as he belts out “It looks like my baby she’s gone, everytime I see her I just cry, cry, cry…my baby she left me and I miss her so, and when I see her she says she’s my baby no more, she’s gone”.
“AGF Out” is the third instrumental and another original featuring the guitar wizardry of Garry Burnside. On the closer, “Garry’s Night Out” Garry croons “you said baby, it’s your night out and I don’t care what you do…just be home before daylight”.
Garry Burnside states “Coming up under my pops and Kimbrough, I learned so much. This album is really a testament to them, what they taught me, and my growth as a musician. I hope it makes them proud. With the impending release Garry is eagerly looking forward to expanding his growth and touring.
