Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Terry Robb
Some musicians collect awards. A rare few become so closely associated with excellence that an award ends up bearing their name. Terry Robb is one of those rare artists.
Born in Vancouver and now based in Portland, Terry Robb is widely regarded as one of the finest acoustic blues guitarists on the international stage. His mastery of fingerstyle guitar is so respected that after winning the Muddy Award for Best Acoustic Guitar multiple times, the Cascade Blues Association permanently named the honor after him. It is a distinction that speaks not only to his technical brilliance, but to his lasting influence on the blues community.
Robb is an Oregon Music Hall of Fame inductee whose work has drawn praise from The Blues Foundation, Rolling Stone, Acoustic Guitar, DownBeat, Guitar Player, Vintage Guitar, Living Blues, and O, The Oprah Magazine. His career has taken him across the country and onto some of music’s most respected stages. He has toured with artists such as Buddy Guy, Steve Miller, Robin Trower, and John Fahey, appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, performed for Portland Trail Blazers games, collaborated with the Oregon Symphony, and had his music featured in Game of Thrones.
Over a career spanning decades, Terry Robb has demonstrated a deep command of nearly every blues style and technique imaginable. His recordings are celebrated worldwide by critics and fellow musicians alike. As a songwriter, his original compositions draw from an unusually wide range of influences, stretching from country blues to John Coltrane, ragtime to Jimi Hendrix, and Americana to American Primitivism.
Robb’s albums have earned award nominations, major honors, and high placements on respected charts and playlists. Yet beyond the accolades, his work continues to resonate because of its warmth, imagination, and unmistakable voice. Terry Robb is not just a virtuoso. He is a musician whose lifelong dedication to the guitar has helped shape the modern acoustic blues tradition.
