Independent Label
Daniel DeLorenzo, guitar; Casey Toll, bass; Theous Jones, drums; Doug Sours, guitar (on trk 4).
All of the music on this album is original and composed by Daniel DeLorenzo. They open with the title tune. It has a funk rhythm driving the song forward by Theous Jones. Casey Toll locks into the groove on his bass and Daniel DeLorenzo introduces us to the catchy melody on his guitar.
This trio easily blends a traditional jazz soundscape with contemporary grooves. It makes each song arrangement quite interesting and also establishes their unique sound. “Clam Chowder” is an interesting composition with Daniel DeLorenzo’s guitar technique on display and a catchy melody.
The trio has a tight, cohesive camaraderie and Daniel DeLorenzo is a fine composer who writes music that encourages my toes to tap and my feet to move. Strangely, at times, his guitar reminds me of a harmonica. It’s in his technical approach to playing the instrument.
His composition called “Emergently” is a pretty ballad with a little taste of the Middle East wrapped into the melody like the shiny ribbon on a pretty package. I find his melodies charming. Many of his melodies encourage me to hum along. On this arrangement, he is joined by long time collaborator, Doug Sours, who is also a guitarist. Their instruments blend beautifully.
The trio continues with a blues titled, “I Wasn’t Going To” and it’s a tune whose title and memorable melody beg for lyrics. Daniel DeLorenzo has his own style of composing, arranging, and his own technique in playing his electric guitar. Their final track surprises me. DeLorenzo has stepped into a totally new realm on “Windfall.” The arrangement is quite contemporary and almost slides into the Smooth jazz vein or adult easy listening. It’s also quite bluesy and you can’t lose when you play the blues.
