Asher Brinson is a 16-year-old left-handed guitar picker, singer, and songwriter whose music feels timeless yet deeply lived-in. Based in Newport on the North Carolina coast, Asher draws inspiration from coastal rhythms, everyday stories, and the people around him. His lifelong exposure to family music traditions suddenly ignited into a true passion after attending a “Doc at 100” concert in 2023. Inspired by what he heard, Asher dove headfirst into bluegrass, teaching himself challenging tunes like “Black Mountain Rag” and entering the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention.
That leap led to a life-changing connection with legendary flatpicker and luthier Wayne Henderson, who became both mentor and close friend. Henderson invited Asher on stage and even gifted him a left-handed Martin D-18. At one of those events, Asher was also offered lessons with acclaimed musician Christopher Henry of Noya Mountain Music. Henry encouraged him to begin songwriting, and within weeks Asher had written seven songs and one instrumental. In 2023, Asher began recording his first studio tracks, marking the beginning of this debut album, Midnight Hurricane.
Asher handles guitar and lead vocals throughout the album and is joined by an impressive supporting cast that includes mandolinists Sierra Hull, Sam Bush, and Christopher Henry, who also contributes bass, electric guitar, snare brush, and baritone vocals. Additional guests include Lindsay Lou on vocals, Cory Walker on banjo, fiddlers Jason Carter and Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, guitarist David Grier, Justin Moses on dobro, and Smith Curry on pedal steel. The album includes eight vocal tracks and three instrumentals.
Asher opens with the title track, “Midnight Hurricane,” featuring Sierra Hull on mandolin, as he sings, “Can’t seem to find no better way, looking high and looking low… like a midnight hurricane, I just want to see my love again.”
On “Lonesome Hobo Song,” with Sam Bush taking over on mandolin, Asher chimes, “It was in the year of ’29, I was in the welfare line… I am a ramblin’ hobo, I got no place to lay my head.”
“And Why Is That?” features Smith Curry on pedal steel as Asher asks, “I fell in love when hearts were low… and why is that?… without your love I’d never get through and why is that? And that is that, I’ve tried and tried to let you go, you’re the one for me, and why is that?”
On “Living Too Fast,” Asher belts, “Living too fast, with leavin’ on my mind… living too fast, got to hit the road… it looks like I suffered looking for the answer… I ain’t got time as life is passing by.”
“Jesus Delivered Today” features Justin Moses on dobro, as Asher cries out, “Ain’t a miracle but Jesus delivered today… for the miracle of saving, the good Lord delivered that day.”
On “Low Hanging Fruit,” Sam Bush returns on mandolin while Asher wails, “I woke up on the mountain, my children by my side… low hanging fruit, I can reach up and grab it… pushin’ through the breeze I can see the forest for the trees, low hanging fruit, I know I can grab it.”
“Queen Anne’s Waltz” features Bronwyn Keith-Hynes on fiddle and serves as the first of three instrumentals.
On “I’m Goin’ Back to Galax,” Asher sings, “Going through the camptown, I get so excited it’s hard to resist, I’m going back to Galax, people come from miles around to pick and sing, I get so excited I’m going back to Galax.”
“Black Mountain Rag” is the second instrumental and features David Grier on guitar.
On “Seven Weeks in County,” featuring Cory Walker on banjo, Jason Carter on fiddle, and Christopher Henry on mandolin, Asher howls, “I got seven weeks in county… I can see they’re out to get me… there is hunger in my belly, and anger in my head… they’re out to catch me, they’ll say I’m guilty at the end.”
The closer, “Cattle on the Cane,” is the third instrumental, with Sam Bush once again contributing mandolin.
Christopher Henry perhaps says it best: “Very few times in my life have I been struck with the feeling that a young person has come onto the scene with as much heart, talent, and authenticity as Asher Brinson. He was like a duck in the water writing his first songs, telling great stories with catchy hooks, including soulful pieces of himself, and singing with a pleasant maturity well beyond his years. He’s got a good lick on the guitar and is a special part of the Carolina lineage of Doc Watson. We can all learn something good through Asher’s music; he’s reflecting wonderful beauty back to the community with the Midnight Hurricane album. I am thrilled that the stars aligned to have so many inspiring musicians join him to make the recording really special. I believe it is one of the best albums of 2026 for sure.”
The songwriting and singing on Midnight Hurricane make it clear that the future of bluegrass music is in very good hands.
