East Nash Grass exemplifies the best of what bluegrass has to offer. After releasing their debut album “Last Chance To Win” they were named the 2024 International Bluegrass Music Association’s “New Artist of the Year”. The ensemble includes Harry Clark, mandolin, lead & harmony vocals; James Kee, bass, lead and harmony vocals; Jeff Partin, bass, lead and harmony vocals; Maddie Denton, fiddle, lead and harmony vocals; Cary Walker, banjo and harmony vocals; and Gavin Largent, dobro.
The album opens with the title track “All God’s Children” with Kee singing “I want you to drop my bags…all God’s children gather there…all I want by the light of day…all God’s children gather there”, with Nash Grier providing the harmony. On “Hill Country” mandolinist Clark sings “just uphill…hill country highway…wondering why you love me …hill country highway may be the long way”.
“Followin’ You” features a lead vocal from fiddler Denton, and Gavin Largent on dobro, as she sings “Been a-way up on the mountain, been waitin’ for the day, I could hardly recognize you through the gray, but you don’t leave me doubtin’ or wondering what to do, so if you’ll let me darlin’ I’ll keep on followin’ you”. “Get Along Little Yearlings” is a cover of a Jimmy Driftwood song with Clark singing “get along little yearlings where going to Texas…we left Alabama and crossed the Mississippi, we’ll circle the wagons and all will be well”, with more great dobro.
“In Such A Short Time” is another vocal from Kee as he chimes “it’s hard to be sure in such a short time, you think you love me, you think you know”, with some fine banjo and mandolin. Bassist Jeff Partin takes the lead vocal on “The Love We Gave Up” as he chants “they’ll be pain for my heart is filled up with leaving, the love we gave up, I should have known from the start my heart is filled with leaving”, as Kee takes a guitar solo.
Clark sings lead again on “Bend In The Road” as he cries “Hold to the curb don’t go too slow, keep your eye on the bend in the road, wind up at the bottom of the hill, the hounds are howlin’ loud and shrill, mind your speed, don’t fowl the gears, pull your hat down past your ears, don’t wave when you pass by, though you have no reason why”.
On “Redbird” Denton sings lead as she chirps “redbird keep singing, redbird don’t leave me, it’s only your heart that I need, I tried and I tried, redbird keep singing, redbird don’t leave me, it’s only your heart I need”. Kee takes the lead again as he belts out on ‘Lonesome Song “A cold cup of coffee in my hand, I can see a hundred miles from where I stand, the honeysuckle flowers are in bloom, but it don’t seem as sweet without you, my lonesome song is ringing through the valley down below, and I’m thinking about the days of long ago, and the way I’m feeling makes me want to find my way back home, but now I’m out here on this mountain all alone”. The closer “Jump Through The Window” was originally an instrumental so the lyrics are few, with background harmony from Cory Walker, Jake Stargel, and Brenna MacMillan.
Individually the ensemble of Harry Clark, mandolin; Cory Walker, banjo; James Kee, guitar; Maddie Denton, fiddle; and Jeff Partin, bass and dobro; are a veritable super- group of award-winners who have been performing longer than anyone would guess. With a lifetime of experience in both new and legacy acts, they have played with Dan Tyminski, Tim O’Brien, Sierra Hull, Rhonda Vincent, and others. They forged their sound during their seven-year weekly residency at a dive bar outside of Nashville. They are irreverent, adventurous, even audacious. They are the unstoppable, extraordinary East Nash Grass.
