Canadian Ginger St. James is a dynamic and charismatic performer renowned forher commanding voice and an eclectic blend of rockabilly, country, and blues that captures the hearts of her audiences. Her style, rooted in rock n’ roll and classic country is an intoxicating mix that transports listeners to smoky Ontario bars and honky-tonks. Ginger’s rise has been fueled by sheer determination and passion, with a flair for the theatrical, as her songs are filled with humour, heartbreak and a touch of mischief. This is her third full length album and follows 2016’s “One For the Money”, and 2019’s “Live At Knox Farms”. The new album was recorded at River 16 Studios in Oakville, Ontario. It was engineered by Steve Kirstein, mixed by Kirstein and Snowheel Slim, and mastered by Noah Mintz. Ginger sings all vocals, while the quartet is completed by Snowheel Slim, guitar; Chris Altmann, bass, pedal steel, piano and organ; and Cleave Anderson, drums. All songs are written by Ginger.
The album opens with “Not Round Here” as Ginger sings sings “I beg to choose… you don’t have to tell when to get off…but now I’m here”. On the mischief-ish “Sweet Renee” with some great pedal steel from Altmann, Ginger belts out “I been arrested for some things I regret”. On “Lonedown Lonesome Blues” she groans “I got a mean old down…every thing is wrong…I got them old lowdown lonesome blues..everybody’s gone, everything is wrong, I got them mean old lonesome blues”.
My favorite “I Think I’d Kinda Like It” she chimes “I think I’d kinda like it if you want to go home with me…we been dancin around this bar…I think I’d kinda like it if you wanted to come home with me”. On “Honky Tonk Hangover” Ginger wails “but I love country…I got up this morning…had a shot of whiskey and got no regrets”.
“Night Terrors” features some great piano, as Ginger chants “it’s time for me to slumber…I’m paralyzed…but I can’t see”. On “Soul Shack” she sings “suddenly I heard a sound, something must be going down, soul shack, I walk inside and what I saw…soul shack, suddenly a revelation came across the congregation, soul shack”.
“Pink Bikini” is a walking blues with some fine bass as Ginger chirps “my favorite pink bilini with the polka dots…start gazing at the nightfall, then I begin to wonder …what a good one can do”. On the closer “Railway Rider” Ginger croons “He makes money…he’s a railway rider…train inspire…he’s a railway rider”.
On “Told Ya” Ginger’s lyrics draws inspiration from everything life throws her way. Ginger is a breath of fresh air. If your someone in search of a good time and great music, her storytelling style of rebellious narratives delivered with swagger will resonate with you. This is highly recommended listening.
