Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey’s Interview with Gwyn Ashton!
Gwyn Ashton, the fiercely dynamic Australian alt-blues rock guitarist, singer, and one-man band, is one of the most electrifying performers on the modern blues circuit. With a blistering new solo album Mojosoul and a brand-new single, Get Outta Town—featuring Guns N’ Roses’ Richard Fortus along with members of Cold Chisel and Superjesus—Ashton continues to push boundaries while staying true to the raw spirit of blues and rock.
In 2023, Ashton hit the road hard, tearing through stages across the Netherlands and Belgium with prog legends Wishbone Ash, co-headlining the Adelaide Guitar Festival in his native Australia, and lighting up audiences in Wales, England, Serbia, Bosnia, Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, and Poland. The momentum rolls into 2024, with an Australian tour and a mainstage slot at the prestigious Great British R&B Festival already on the calendar.
A true road warrior and natural showman, Ashton stands tall among the new wave of blues rockers like Jack White, The Black Keys, and Seasick Steve. Armed with a rack of electrics, acoustics, resonators, lap slides, pawnshop oddities, and 12-strings, he conjures a gritty, electrified soundscape that fuses blues tradition with rock energy. His shows are a full-body experience—he kicks out beats on Bill Ward’s vintage Black Sabbath drum kit, lays down fuzz bass with his thumb, wails on bottleneck slide guitar, belts vocals, and blows harmonica into a lo-fi radio mic, all at once.
Influenced by the raw edge of Hendrix and the stylistic flair of David Lindley, Ashton is as much a storyteller as he is a shredder. His stage presence is magnetic—gritty, engaging, and always unpredictable.
Ashton’s discography spans ten critically acclaimed albums, many of which earned “Track of the Week” honors from Classic Rock Magazine. He’s collaborated with rock royalty including Don Airey (Deep Purple), Neil Murray (Whitesnake), Robbie Blunt (Robert Plant), and members of Rory Gallagher’s band. His reputation among legends speaks for itself:
“The most versatile performer we’ve had” – Deep Ellum Blues Club, Dallas
“The king of feel” – Robert Plant
“A true bluesman” – Johnny Winter
“A real player” – David Crosby
A former Virgin Records France artist, Ashton was lead guitarist for Rory Gallagher’s Band of Friends in Europe and played alongside Aussie icons Stevie Wright (The Easybeats) and Jim Keays (The Master’s Apprentices). Over the years, he has shared stages with BB King, Buddy Guy, Ray Charles, Peter Green, Van Morrison, Hubert Sumlin, Mick Taylor, Status Quo, The Yardbirds, Slade, Robin Trower, Steve Hackett, The Troggs, and many more. He’s also jammed live with Mick Fleetwood, Walter Trout, Canned Heat, and Steely Dan’s Elliot Randall.
Whether in a packed festival tent or a sweat-soaked club, Gwyn Ashton delivers a powerhouse performance every time. Don’t miss the chance to witness one of the hardest-working, most authentic voices in blues rock today—coming soon to a stage near you.
