I Don’t Like What’s Going On
Bluzpik Media Group
Ex-New Yorker and multi- Instrumentalist Peter Roland has had a varied career. He opened for John Mayall, Eric Burdon, and Buddy Miles. As a Jazz Society member he played with John McLaughlin, Tony Williams, Jaco Pastorious, and Herbie Mann. He has also played in punk-rock bands.
As a songwriter Roland won an FM radio contest on K-Rock and appeared on the Howard Stern show. He has also written jingles for Anheuser Busch; and written scores for independent films. He has since relocated to Florida and currently plays guitar for Kat Riggins’ Blues Revival.
This EP was released some six months ago. Unfortunately, I knew nothing of Roland and decided that I would pass in reviewing the EP. On December 23rd, Riggins’ played an online facebook concert and I witnessed her fine band with Roland on lead guitar. Impressed I decided to re-listen to this recording. I also noticed that the sleeve was designed by harmonica ace Clay Goldstein, who also performs in a duo with Roland. The album was recorded and mixed by Marc Loren at the 42nd St. Studio in Fort Lauderdale.
A five-song EP guitarist and vocalist Roland is accompanied by bassist George Caldwell, also a member of Blues Revival; and drummer Jerome Dukes. Special guest guitarist JP Soars also appears on two tracks including Roland originals “Black Cat Bone”, and “Evil” on which Soars switches to dobro. Two more great songs written by Roland are “Lonely Tonight” and the title track. The only cover is “Losin’ Hand” first recorded by Ray Charles in 1963.
Riggins’ Blues Revival is an incredible band featuring Roland, Caldwell, Goldstein and others. Although this solo EP from Roland is just a teaser, I admittedly want to hear more from him too.
